Abstract

Friedman’s Capitalism and Freedom (1962) is considered. It is noted that his account of the philosophy of freedom, its historical development in nineteenth-century Britain, and the theoretical relationship between it and capitalism, is facile. On the other hand, his imaginative treatment of the ways in which the market system and the price mechanism can promote desirable outcomes is innovative, clever, and invites profound reflection.
