Geographic Patterns of Multidimensional Deprivation in the United States

Abstract

This chapter maps the geography of multidimensional deprivation by examining variation across U.S. Census regions and divisions and at the state and sub-state (Public Use Microdata Area (PUMA)) levels. Using data from the 2008–2023 American Community Survey in conjunction with the Multidimensional Deprivation Index (MDI), persistent spatial disparities are identified. The West and South regions, and particularly the Pacific and West South Central divisions, along with the Middle Atlantic division, consistently exhibit the highest MDI, headcount ratio, and average intensity of deprivation values. States such as California, New York, and Texas are found to exhibit some of the highest overall deprivation levels, with areas within Los Angeles, New York City, and Houston showing particularly high concentrations. Moreover, disaggregating patterns of deprivation by dimension and indicator reveals spatial clustering. By demonstrating the importance of place in shaping deprivation outcomes, this chapter calls attention to the need for the inclusion of geography in studies of multidimensional deprivation in the United States and for geographically targeted policy interventions.
