Abstract

Focusing on the tribal regions of Eastern Gujarat, the study on which this chapter is based investigated tribal women’s experiences of land dispossession, their struggles and strategies to claim the land and the violence implicit in both processes. The study was undertaken in the field area of ANANDI Gujarat, a feminist collective that has engaged in women’s land rights over the past two decades. The chapter examines the gendered dimensions of land ownership and livelihoods in the context of subsistence economies, and in situations of displacement and dispossession. It analyses institutional mechanisms and policies that facilitate or impede women’s ability to negotiate use and ownership of land, and documents strategies of women’s resistance to dispossession.
