Abstract

This chapter presents the rationale for this work. It then goes further to give a brief overview of conflict in Africa and Darfur. It is followed by a review of the impacts of conflict on women with reference to relevant previous research on women and conflict. The purpose is to give a comprehensive picture of the status of women during and after war. Intra-national conflicts are prevalent on the African continent. Half of the states of Africa have experienced conflict, affecting 20% of the continent’s population. Many features and consequences of these violent armed conflicts deserve attention. This book presents empirical findings of the study carried in Darfur of western Sudan. However, the findings of this study can be applicable to other conflict zones in the African continent because of their similarities. This affirms this book’s appeal.
