Abstract

This chapter analyzes trends in financing for women’s organizations and women’s movements drawing on research conducted by the Association for Women’s Rights in Development. This research analyzes the financial status of women’s organizations and then examines the contribution of various funding actors, including bilateral, multilateral, private foundations, women’s funds, international non-governmental organizations and philanthropists, in supporting gender equality and women’s rights organizing. Given the significance and prominence of the private sector in development financing, the chapter will draw on research that illustrates a complex panorama of new actors and new resources for women and girls that brings with it new opportunities and challenges. The chapter will focus on the importance of supporting women’s rights organizations working to build women’s collective power for change. It not only gives an overview of current funding trends and landscape but also offers concrete recommendations on strategic interventions by funders that can result in long-term, transformative change for gender equality and women’s rights.
