Abstract

The idea of Unconditional Basic Income has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years (Van Parijs, 1995, 2003; Birnbaum, 2012; Noguera et al., 2013; Widerquist, 2013, 2017; Van Parijs & Vanderborght, 2017). This is fuelled by the growing awareness of the challenges posed by inequality, automation, climate change, and the limitations of current social welfare systems. A UBI is thus offered as an alternative that can help solve these global issues (Zelleke, 2005; Van Parijs, 2013; Merrill et al., 2019; Pinto, 2020; Langridge et al., 2023). This edited book features recent work on some normative and empirical debates about Unconditional Basic Income. It draws from several disciplines, with contributions from philosophy, political science, and economics, while exploring UBI’s potential to reshape the political, economic, and ecological landscape of the twenty-first century.
