Abstract

Chapter five begins with an introduction to the historical and theoretical roots of welfare regime analysis, discussing the development of ideal type welfare regimes. It then moves onto develop a basic income ideal type welfare regime, measuring three dimensions of basic income: unconditionality, universalism and non-withdrawal of benefits. It applies the measures to welfare benefits for unemployed people across ten European countries. The analysis reveals how empirical examples of welfare regimes align or diverge from the ideal type basic income model, enabling readers to see the diversity of welfare systems across Europe as they relate to unemployed people.
