Abstract

This paper intends to explore the characteristics of motivation to start a business and also the perceptions of various aspects of entrepreneurship in case of female participants in a business incubator which was active during 2012-2013 in a project funded by structural European funds. The aim of the business incubator was to stimulate and support the launching and the development of start-ups for more than 500 from the 900 participants included in entrepreneurship courses. The methodology is based on secondary analysis by using participants’ applications (short essays) on the e-learning platform of the project. The qualitative analysis of 500 applications explores the motivation of female entrepreneurs and the perception of various aspects: the entrepreneurial self-efficacy, the profile of a successful entrepreneur, and success/failure factors while developing a start-up. The personality characteristics mostly mentioned were creativity/innovativeness, determination, responsibility, need for achievement. The motivation declared by participants was extrinsic and intrinsic, with a greater proportion of the extrinsic factors (financial gain and independence). In regard to the barriers perceived for entrepreneurial action, the objective barriers were the most intense (lack of funds for investment), while also subjective factors as fear of failure, lack of confidence and experience were mentioned.
