Strategies for Internationalization of Bulgarian SMEs in South-West Bordering Regions after EU Enlargement

Abstract

This paper focuses on the impact of EU Enlargement over internationalization strategies of Bulgarian SMEs in Southwest cross-border region (from import/export to FDI) and main motives for internationalization. Considered is both internal and external competition that influences the internationalization process, given that Bulgaria is a small country with small domestic market. The main objective is to summarize the most commonly used strategies for internationalization of SMEs in Southwest Bulgaria after EU Enlargement, and how these influence firms’ performance. On the basis of field research are determined the main sectors in which SMEs are competitive enough to enter the foreign markets.
