Biosensors in Detection of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can accumulate in soil, water resources, and living organisms as well act as food contaminants. Monitoring their presence is important in learning how to control their numbers. Mass spectroscopy coupled chromatographic methods, including LC and GC, and coupled spectroscopy methods have been used to monitor the levels and types of the PAH for over 90 years. In addition, biosensors have been introduced to detect PAHs in the last 50 years. Even though current endeavors in both electrochemical and optical biosensors show outstanding performance in the detection of PAHs, they require further advancement to be a part of casual elements in reliable PAH detection. In this review of PAH detection, historical perspectives, current status, and outlook along with suggestions will be discussed.
