Abstract

Application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is an integrated circuit (IC) that can perform specific application. The outstanding features of ASIC such as very low production cost, small size, and short time to market are very much popular in recent hardware industries. Low-power ASICs are another important issue for portable devices (like laptop, cellular phones, etc.) which make several numbers of ICs. With the advent of VLSI technology, the transistor size diminishes to enhance the performance of the system but substantially increases the power density. Consequently, power-efficient design techniques have been the necessary requirement to operate a system for longer life. This article discusses various sources of power dissipation and reduction techniques from the top to bottom level.
