Import Demand Estimation with Country and Product Effects: Application of Multi-Way Unbalanced Panel Data Models to Lebanese Imports

Abstract

Ce papier présente une nouvelle approche pour l'évaluation empirique des élasticités de demande d'importation. Cette approche utilise un système de demande d'importation flexible (Almost Ideal Demand System : AIDS) couplé d'un modèle économétrique incorporant une spécification du terme d'erreur multi-niveaux adaptée aux cylindrées dans le cas des panels. En utilisant des données issues de l'administration des douanes libanaises, on effectue une analyse empirique à un niveau très désagrégé des parts d'importation. Un système de parts d'importation est estimé pour les principaux produits agricoles européens en contrôlant pour des effets fixes produits, pays et année, et en évaluant les effets prix relatifs aux concurrents non européens. Les résultats confirment que la structure du terme d'erreur du modèle empirique est plus riche que celle généralement utilisée dans la littérature.
