The evolution of the Italian industrial district: Arzignano’s leather district from area monoculturale to area sistema integrata di innovazione

Abstract

Through the study of Arzignano’s leather district, this chapter presents the evolution of the Italianate industrial district, highlighting the resilience of this model of local economic development. The first part presents the conceptual framework of this evolution; the Arzignano leather district is analyzed in the second part of the chapter, moving from the proliferation of tanneries in the area that created the industrial district, first as an industrial monoculture area and then as an integrated Area Sistema. Ancillary industries’ development in the area is pointed out as one of the reasons for the unceasing success of the district. Moreover, the importance of this integration as the basis for constant innovation implemented throughout the district is elucidated. In conclusion, the chapter highlights how the Arzignano district can now be considered the latest incarnation of the Italianate district, an integrated area of innovation.
