Abstract

Designing and delivering education at scale effectively is a challenge faced by many higher education institutions. This challenge is both an economic one, where the costs of magnifying and multiplying education offerings need to be matched by the revenue, and a pedagogical one, ensuring the quality of the teaching and learning does not fade with repetition or lose students in a sea of faces. Scale is also an abstract term with a varied understanding about what it means for the teacher and student and how technology is used to make it possible. This chapter will explore the notion of scale in higher education and why it is important to the design of effective learning. Using the frame of chaos and calm, we will offer practical examples of how you can design experiences for your students working in large groups that leverage the power of the crowd and the collective intelligence of students connecting and reflecting at scale.
