Middle East and North Africa (MENA): a German-Arab team

Abstract

The region of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) comprises several nations, which have a lot in common, but at the same time, they are very different from each other in various respects, for example, regarding their progress in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition to the regional differences, there is great diversity among the inhabitants within each of the MENA countries. This chapter offers an insight into the commonalities in the region and their historical background, as well as the diversity among and within MENA countries, focusing on the Arabic-speaking part of the region. The case of the German-Arab team in Stuber Stoves illustrates this cultural complexity and how to deal responsibly with intersectional diversity. Etic positivist, emic interpretive and power-sensitive critical approaches are combined for the case analysis.
