Abstract

Two solutions are proposed to deal with the adverse consequences of POP. The radical solution is that if POP is a neoliberal phenomenon, then the problems of POP can be circumvented by abandoning neoliberalism. The less than radical solution requires reforms and action to kill the journal industry and reverse the unnecessary proliferation of published research. The better alternative would be to abandon the market dogma and start thinking of health and education as investment in human capital. The way forward is to go back to days gone by, prior to the emergence of the destructive ideas associated with Reaganism-Thatcherism.
