Introduction on banking

Abstract

EU banking regulation has evolved significantly over time. The first banking directives were adopted in the 1970s and 1980s in order to liberalise the European banking sector. The 2007-8 global financial crisis and the follow-on 2010 eurozone sovereign debt crisis gave further impetus to EU banking regulation, whose objectives since then have gone beyond the integration of the European banking markets to also include financial stability concerns. The European Banking Single Rule Book, applicable in the 27 EU countries, imposes stronger prudential and governance requirements for banks, contains rules for managing failing banks and improves protection for depositors.
