Abstract

Directive 2014/49/EU of 16 April 2014 on deposit guarantee schemes (DGSD) improved the European legal framework, which aims to protect the deposits of individual savers and to safeguard the stability of the banking system, by requiring all EU credit institutions to join a deposit guarantee scheme (DGS) and by laying down rules relating to the functioning of such DGSs. The DGSD lays down rules and procedures relating to the establishment and the functioning of officially recognised DGSs as well as to the credit institutions affiliated to DGSs. The DGSD applies in relation to depositors of any credit institution located in an EU Member State, regardless of whether its currency is the euro or not.
