Abstract

Journal rankings have assumed increasing importance in tourism management in recent years as part of the overall shift to a managerialist culture in universities and particularly as a result of increasing external evaluation of research quality. Publication in highly ranked journals is now the principal route to academic promotion and prestige, including editorial positions, grant awards and appointments. This chapter critically reflects on journal rankings. It discusses the ranking methodologies, their flaws and subjectivities, considers how a fixation with journal rankings is shaping the field’s development and the careers of its scholars and concludes with some advice for new scholars negotiating their way through journal rankings.
