Abstract

Publishing papers plays a crucial role in determining academic success in contemporary universities. It serves as a straightforward measure of an individual’s performance and contributes to institutional assessments of worth and excellence. While the simplicity of measuring publication output is increasingly questioned due to the emergence of dubious journals and ‘gaming’ of evaluation systems, publication productivity remains a central consideration. This chapter offers key points for successful academic publishing. It emphasizes the importance of familiarizing oneself with publishing procedures and understanding local metrics and cultures of publishing. Starting to publish early in one’s career is encouraged, with opportunities available even at the undergraduate level. Directing work to the most appropriate outlet is crucial, and various strategies are suggested for finding the right journal. By following these guidelines, aspiring academics can enhance their chances of achieving publishing success.
