Abstract

To be an academic superhero there are numerous tasks and responsibilities that can overwhelm even the most dedicated individuals. The pressure to constantly improve teaching, engage with students, write papers and handle administrative duties can be daunting. This chapter explores three approaches to managing your academic career. The first option is to do less, risking the potential for an unsuccessful career. The second option is to take on everything simultaneously, sacrificing personal well-being for short-term success. The third and recommended approach involves prioritizing and planning your career in different time scales, ensuring a balance between long-term and short-term goals while accounting for life’s uncertainties. By setting broad ambitions, considering future aspirations and strategically using academic profiles, you can develop a flexible career plan that guides your progress.
