The impact of foreign immigrants on the revitalization of rural areas in Spain

Abstract

The arrival of foreign immigrants in recent decades has been considered an opportunity to halt depopulation and decline in some Spanish rural areas. In this chapter we analyse the foreign population, focusing on the evolution, dynamics, and some sociodemographic and economic characteristics of rural areas. We draw on a literature review, as well as data from the continuous Population Register, the Economically Active Population Survey (EPAS), and the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE). This review shows the relatively important presence of foreign immigrants in these areas, and that the local impact they generate and their presence in small municipalities are important. The results also suggest that the ability of rural areas to retain their populations depends on the characteristics of rural settlements and new residents’ profiles. Support for and the retention of such populations are necessary.
