What is a meeting?

Abstract

In this brief chapter, various definitions of ‘the meeting’ are discussed. We define it as focused social interaction, and a temporally and spatially delimited activity that occurs once (but may be repeated in the same form on many occasions), with a limited number of participants. However, we also show limitations in this definition. The chapter also contains an empirical description of how certain groups try to resist the bureaucratic connotations of meetings by avoiding the term ‘meeting’ altogether, even if their activities must be conceived of as meetings.
