Abstract

This chapter discusses international solidarity as the normative vehicle for 21st century multilateralism. It explains the conceptual foundation of international solidarity and explains the tension between unitary and network solidarity according to Carol Gould. The Revised Draft Declaration on Human Rights and International Solidarity is presented, addressing justiciability issues and the role of duties in human rights. There is a review of the output of the UN General Assembly and the UN Human Rights Council in the form resolutions on solidarity. An account of the phenomenon of regionalism in the Human Rights Council in relation to solidarity is provided. Regional solidarity programs and normative output are assessed and there are examples of solidarity policies by select states. The chapter discusses solidarity and access to global public goods. It provides a catalogue of the state of the art of literature and then provides an overview of the book chapters.
