Disruptive technologies or disruptive debates? On a disrupted discussion about the future of jobs

Abstract

Since approximately 2013, numerous reports have been published that engage in different aspects of the debate about AI and employment and/or AI and the future of jobs. Reading through all those reports suggests to us a process of setting a stage for a new management fashion debate, such as usually accompanies new waves of technological developments. We leave the discussion of whether and to what extend AI itself is a new tech development aside, but the debate about AI and future of jobs and work seems to be both pressured and polarized, which is typical for setting a fresh wave in management fashion. In this chapter, we aim to unmask the ‘fashionable’ debates about AI and the future of jobs by offering a choice-based solution to the debate. We also make a call for responsible scientific actions - to anticipate a disruptive effect of publishing un-nuanced findings - in which we build on the example of the unpublished paper by Frey and Osborne, 2013.
