CEO activism: Connecting with stakeholders

In: Handbook on Corporate Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility

Abstract

We are currently living in an age where firms are increasingly asked to take a stand or to respond to various environmental and social issues such as climate change or individual or group rights (e.g., women, LGBTQ+, visible minorities, etc.). However, the importance and the stakes involved in these debates often bring Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) to the forefront to enhance the credibility of a firm’s position. This chapter explores the role played by CEOs in this new era and how it affects relations with a firm’s stakeholders.
