Gendered impacts of COVID-19 on international students in Korea

Abstract

The direct and indirect impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken by host countries on international students have been widely studied, but its gender dimension has been relatively neglected. Our chapter aims to revisit its immediate impacts on international student mobility and to examine international student experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Republic of Korea drawn from the Korea Immigration Service Statistics and the Survey on Immigrants’ Living Conditions and Labour Force. We present the changes in international student flows and stocks by gender and also explore the gendered impact on residing international students before and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our results show that (1) female international student flows to Korea are disproportionately affected, and (2) female international students in Korea are facing greater financial difficulties from the COVID-19 pandemic, but no gendered patterns can be observed in terms of psychological impacts.
