Abstract

COVID-19’s impacts on labour markets and the economy disproportionately impacted women. While many see the challenge of the pandemic as one of returning to the pre-pandemic normal, we argue that a resumption of the pre-COVID-19 “business as usual” for the economy will fail any aspirations we may have for gender equality in society. COVID-19 laid bare the fragile base on which apparent economic and political gains for women were based. The most important lesson from the pandemic with respect to how we can “build back better” is to leverage the awareness of changes needed for greater economic inclusion leading to purposeful design of economic and social policies needed to achieve gender equality.
