Abstract

Agriculture in China is featured by the large quantities of smallholder farmers due to limited farmland and large rural population. Farmer cooperatives are considered to play an essential role in promoting common prosperity in rural areas in China. This paper firstly introduces the principles and governance features of Chinese cooperatives, with a special focus on the distinction between core and common members. Then we map the development of China's farmer cooperatives by an overview of the numbers of cooperatives, membership size, revenue, and governmental support for cooperatives. Next, a systematic review of farmer cooperatives in the Chinese literature is conducted to analyze the main topics that Chinese scholars focus on in recent years.
