The research landscape of MNEs and SDGs: what we know and what needs to be done?

Abstract

Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) play a significant role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The contribution of business and management scholars to the discussion surrounding the SDGs and their impact on business organizations have grown exponentially in the last years. Therefore, we believe that it would be beneficial for scholars and practitioners to know the status of research in this field. More importantly, knowing what kind of research has been done so far would give us a better understanding of what needs to be done to reach the Sustainable Development Goals in 2030. For this chapter, we conducted a systematic review to examine, through bibliometric analysis of research, the role and contributions of multinational enterprises in accomplishing the SDGs. The results indicate that the core research themes focus on four areas: corporate social responsibility in international business; business strategy and business performance as related to SDGs, corporate sustainability, and business innovation that can tackle global issues such as poverty.
