The geography of green technological invention: a life cycle perspective

Abstract

This chapter aims to disentangle the pro-growth effect of technological progress by focusing on the potential role of exports as a mediator in the innovation-growth nexus. Considering different firms’ innovative behaviors based on the product/process and on the standard/environmental dichotomies, results show that in comparison with their non-innovative peers, innovative companies benefit from a superior growth premium stemming from the mediated growth effect of export. Furthermore, the direct effect of innovation on firms’ enlargement is more likely to be found for enterprises who jointly combine product and process innovations, irrespective of whether standard or environmental dichotomies, as well as for those only introducing environment-friendly products.
