Abstract

Fueled by the availability of administrative data, the literature on intergenerational income transmission has grown in recent years to include multiple studies capturing mobility at fine geographical levels. What evidence can we glean from within-country analyses? This chapter reviews the main studies in the literature, in particular those of Chetty and colleagues at Opportunity Insights, but also those from different parts of the world. Moving beyond the descriptive findings, we also ask ourselves what we can learn from this type of studies in terms of the processes underlying intergenerational transmissions, and how they can help inform public policies promoting more equal opportunities.
