Abstract

This chapter is dedicated to mixed methods action research (MMAR). Mixed methods action research is an original and novel approach, suitable for research in complex organisational settings. The misconception that action research is a qualitative method is due in part to the belief that action-orientated work cannot be scientific. This chapter demonstrates that the combining of quantitative techniques (surveys and statistical analyses), qualitative data (interviews, observation, and discourse analysis) and action research (actions, meeting, and workshops) can strengthen scientific rigour and replicability. Mixed methods requires both qualitative and quantitative research procedures and skills, including the ability to perform statistical operations. Whilst action research has the flexibility to use qualitative, quantitative or both research procedures, the synergy of MMAR research is in the integration of data within the study. At a practical level, MMAR research can provide a new appreciation for a data-driven decision-making process, thus making it relevant in the business world.
