Abstract

This chapter proposes contemporary healthcare as a unique case for ethical leadership. Definitions of ethical leadership are explored before considering philosophical frameworks derived from moral philosophy, specifically utilitarianism, deontology and virtue ethics, as well as contrasting this with contextualism. A number of ethical dilemmas related to healthcare leadership are considered and presented as vignettes, to apply the four philosophical frameworks discussed. Before concluding, we turn our attention from contemporary ethical leadership dilemmas to emerging ethical dilemmas associated with a changing world, including: the future of organising healthcare and systems leadership, the role of patient leaders, digital healthcare, and finally healthcare and environmental sustainability.
