Levels and trends in multidimensional poverty in Algeria, Iraq and Tunisia, using a counting-based approach

Abstract

This chapter assesses levels and trends in multidimensional poverty for two different years in Algeria (2012/13 and 2018/19), Iraq (2011 and 2018) and Tunisia (2012 and 2018) using the M-gamma multidimensional poverty measures suggested by Alkire and Foster (2019). The decomposition properties of these measures are exploited to shed light on the changes over time in the three ‘I’s of poverty and in the profile of deprivation among the poor. The results show that, despite the fragile economic and social context since the Arab Spring, multidimensional poverty has decreased over the last decade in all three countries. Poverty decreases benefited the poorest as not only incidence and intensity decreased but also inequality among the poor. However, changes in the deprivation profile among the poor indicate an alarming increase of deprivation in nutrition in Algeria, in school attendance and early pregnancy in Iraq and in education in Tunisia.
