Abstract

Innovation is a highly diverse activity with firms being involved in different innovation activities. Firms can innovate through product or business process innovation; they can adopt new technologies developed by other firms or engage in in-house research activities. Traditional indicators measuring the share of innovative firms therefore have limited value to analysts and policy makers. This chapter, building on earlier work on innovation modes, discusses how the 2016 and 2018 editions of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) have been used to develop different innovation profiles for firms in Europe. The chapter will discuss both how different CIS survey questions have been combined to differentiate between both innovative and non-innovative firms and includes results for European countries using CIS 2016 and CIS 2018 data.
