Abstract

This chapter introduces many of the topics in the second edition of this handbook, as well as citing chapters in the first edition and showing how they connect. Emphasis in the early part of the book is on the definition of business innovation which is examined in the third edition of the Oslo Manual, and definitions found there. The first mention of the general definition of innovation occurs and raises questions for later discussion in the book. Innovation indicators and, how they are found, are introduced. This leads to the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) and the role it plays. It is timely that the CIS has been revised and the CIS Living Library provides a wide range of information. Later chapters of the book discuss innovation outside the definitions in the Oslo Manual and this is introduced in the chapter. Social innovation which occurs in parts of the book is an example, as is frugal innovation.
