Abstract

In this chapter, we examine the existing work in managerial discretion, with particular emphasis on the intersections of managerial discretion with stakeholder theory and corporate governance. We then examine how discretion is defined by managers. When managers think about how much discretion they have, in some sense they may create or limit their own discretion. We suggest that thinking about free will and moral imagination can work to expand or constrict a manager’s level of discretion. Avenues for future research are suggested.
