Making choices: the roles of rescuers in Rwanda and Bosnia

Abstract

What can be learned from people who stepped away from horrific actions committed by their own groups and tried to save the “other”? Stories of acts of moral courage compel us to try to understand about the urge to do good rather than remaining mesmerized by evil. The examples from upstanders’ acts show the possibility of resisting the tremendous pressure during mass violence to abandon empathy and succumb to hate-filled group-think and prejudice. By incorporating rescuers/upstander narratives into genocide education mandates helps further generations to enable citizens to imagine themselves as rescuers and hopefully stand up against mass atrocities and injustice.
