The propulsive role of the space industry in industrial development: evaluating the case of spaceports

Abstract

In the last decade public interest and support for space exploration has been re-ignited. Although the recent publicity concerning robotic mission and space tourism has dominated media headlines, the space economy is becoming a propulsive one in industrial development. Consequently, a space variant of Industry 4.0 industrial strategies, Space 4.0, is central to the creation of a wider and deeper set of socioeconomic benefits. Evaluating these benefits, within a more heterogeneous framework, is crucial to realising the objectives of Space 4.0. This chapter explores these issues by drawing on an analysis of the European Space Agency (ESA) European Space Exploration Envelope Programme (E3P). Some of the results are then applied to an evaluation of the case study of the Prestwick Spaceport in Scotland. In doing so, this chapter contributes to the understanding of the role of the space sector in industrial development within the concept and practice of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) strategies.
