Abstract

Education is at the heart of the development process and a central aspect of many sport for development and peace (SDP) initiatives. Whilst education is often a foundational component of SDP and a key mechanism through which programmes seek to support transformative outcomes, there has been limited critical analysis of education delivered in this context. This chapter provides a critical review of education delivered through SDP, examining how SDP curriculums are constructed, who delivers education and the types of pedagogies used before reflecting on some of the impacts and limitations of SDP education. The chapter outlines the Global North/South power dynamics inherent within SDP education and reflects on the ways these constrain the transformative potential of SDP. The chapter concludes by discussing areas of future research, advocating for greater focus on examining the locally driven approaches to education and how these can be enacted.
