ASEAN's role in global multilateral forums

Abstract

ASEAN has played an important role in global multilateral forums. However, it is unclear what that role exactly is and if ASEAN has been able to adapt to new global norms that might be considered contradictory to its cognitive prior. This chapter addresses ASEAN’s role in global multilateral forums and how ASEAN acts on these platforms. The argument is that ASEAN’s role in multilateral forums is best explained from the principal-agent perspective. By using three prevalent case studies, economic issues, human rights and climate change, at least three important observations stand out. First, ASEAN performs the role of an agent at global multilateral forums for its member states. Second, ASEAN tries to reconcile its centrality, and lastly, ASEAN is quite sensitive towards its image internationally.
