Abstract

Sustainability assessment and reporting are on the rise. Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and, to some extent, Life Cycle Sustainability Assessments (LCSAs) are increasingly being used in industry. Sustainability reports are based in some parts on LCA and, at the same time, almost every LCA and LCSA mentions the challenge of choosing system boundaries, making assumptions, data availability, interpretation and especially comparability. Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and benchmarking can be of relevant support in terms of comparability of studies or even the environmental performance of products. This chapter focuses on the definition of benchmarks, benchmarking and KPI in the context of LCSA and focuses on existing approaches, possibilities and challenges.
