Unpacking transformation in higher education and framing a future research agenda

Abstract

This concluding chapter identifies and synthesizes the major themes conveyed in the Research Handbook on the Transformation of Higher Education. First, the chapter assesses the impact of the socio-political, technological, and market forces that drive higher education transformation. This section also examines the roles of various actors in higher education transformation and reviews the barriers and challenges to transformation at the system and organizational levels. Second, it identifies and assesses the core concepts and theoretical frameworks that can be used to conduct research on higher education transformation. Finally, the chapter offers recommendations for future research. These recommendations call for additional studies of collective, multi-level leadership during the transformational change process.
