Abstract

This chapter critically examines the role of technical and nontechnical information technology (IT) self-efficacy in narrowing the IT gender gap. Traditional stereotypical perceptions regarding technical skills (as masculine skills) and non-technical skills (as feminine skills) are expected to differentially shape men’s and women’s self-efficacy. This chapter illustrates how the key sources of self-efficacy that are essential for building confidence are working against women. The contrarian view of IT self-efficacy presented in this chapter illustrates how the sources of IT self-efficacy contribute to the declining number of women in IT. This chapter concludes with the following call to action -if we want to reverse this trend, it is necessary to examine the role of those who are engaged in exclusion.
