Abstract

This chapter focuses on organizational efforts to increase the proportion and experiences of women in information technology (IT) education and employment. In particular, it draws on the work of the National Center for Women in Information Technology (NCWIT). Since its foundation in 2004, the NCWIT has focused on how to attract and retain women in IT in the United States. It has sought to build the organization’s work on a strong foundation of social science research. To this end, it formed the Social Science Advisory Board (SAAB). The author of this chapter has been a member of SAAB since 2008 and was a co-chair from 2010 to 2012. This chapter is the author’s perspective on NCWIT as a gender scholar and a SAAB member with a focus on areas of particular importance for women of color.
