Abstract

Divergence in the performance of countries in their endeavours to contain the coronavirus has been quite conspicuous. Countries differ with respect to their responses to the pandemic, as some acted quickly, while others responded slowly. Differences in severity are not only determined by response to the pandemic but also by socio-economic differences, even though a rapid and appropriate response proved to be a critical factor. In this chapter measures and determinants of the severity of Covid-19 are examined, to assess country performance with respect to the containment of the virus. The measures of severity include the reproduction rate, infection and mortality rates, and a statistical measure. The determinants of severity include population density and structure, preparedness, time, testing, international tourist arrivals, and others.
