Abstract

This chapter investigates freight transport pricing by analysing theoretical and practical issues pertaining to the road, rail, air, and maritime segments. It discusses both the internalisation of freight transport externalities and the pricing of freight transport services, providing useful insights into the different sector characteristics, geographical dimensions, and intermodal relationships. The most important peculiarity of freight transport pricing pertains to the relationship between transport and logistic elements where the former is just a (usually minor) component of the latter. Therefore, decisions made by stakeholders should always be studied with due consideration of the wider logistic picture to understand the overall rationality of the choices made, which might otherwise appear inconsistent. The chapter illustrates how freight transport pricing is a complex, heterogeneous, and articulated matter characterised by different hurdles to overcome when trying to provide a theoretically robust, comprehensive, and balanced account of the different issues that influence its current state and future evolutions.
