Abstract

This chapter covers the content-technology that will create a new type of visual media. We first look at the impact of technology on content in traditional media. We then explore the long-run trends in the information-enrichment of media in terms of bits per second, and find a steady increase at about 8% per year. This enrichment is being utilized by “content engineering†that creates the building blocks for next generation video: tools of individualization; interactivity; immersion; animation rendering; natural language processing; virtual reality; avatars; virtual worlds; and localization. It provides content creators with new authoring tools. An appendix is added which describes the systems architecture of a future TV system that incorporates these capabilities.
