Empirical methods and methodological developments in economics of health and health behaviour: A discussion of theory and applications

Abstract

This chapter aims to explore and review methodological developments relevant to economics of health and health behaviour with specific examples derived from related literature on smoking, diet, obesity and physical activity. While the purpose of this empirical literature has been to estimate the causal effect of health behaviour on health and labour market outcomes, it has been a challenging goal to achieve due to the lack of controlled experiments in social sciences including health economics. To overcome these challenges, various methods based on observational data have been developed in economics and applied in economics and other social sciences. In this chapter, selected methodological developments that are most relevant to economics of health and health behaviour are reviewed. After discussing randomised control trials based on experimental data, alternative methods based on observational data are presented with specific examples derived from empirical literature in economics of health and health behaviour.
